The Graduate Institute of International Studies HEI, or Graduate Institute (French: Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement, formerly Institut des hautes études internationales), abbreviated IHEID (formerly HEI, IHEI, or IUHEI), is a government – ​​postgraduate institution Accredited Higher Education located in Geneva, Switzerland.

The institution includes United Nations Secretary-General (Kofi Annan), seven Nobel Laureates, one Pulitzer Prize winner, and numerous ambassadors, foreign ministers, and heads of state among its alumni and faculty. [5] The Graduate Institute was founded by two senior officials of the League of Nations, and maintains strong ties with that international organization’s successor, the United Nations, and many graduates have gone on to work for UN agencies.

Founded in 1927, the Higher Institute of International Studies (IHEI or HEI) was the oldest school of international relations in continental Europe and was the world’s first graduate institute dedicated solely to the study of international affairs. It offered one of the first doctoral programs in international relations in the world. In 2008, the Graduate Institute absorbed the Higher Institute of Development, a smaller graduate institution also based in Geneva that was founded in 1961. The merger led to the creation of the current Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.

Today the school enrolls nearly a thousand graduate students from more than 100 countries. International students make up approximately 90% of the student body and the school is officially an English and French bilingual institution, although the majority of classes are in English. The Graduate Institute strives to attract talented scholars from all over the world, regardless of origin and financial ability. We invest over CHF 2 million each year to support our students throughout their studies, thanks to our donors and Solidarity Fund.

The financial aid offered and funded by the Institute is a great opportunity that will provide students with financial support for tuition fees, living expenses and the overall cost of studying in Switzerland. Swiss and non-Swiss residents are eligible to apply for and receive the award. Applicants must have a relevant Bachelor’s degree certificate.

Advantages of the HEI International Scholarship

The scholarship includes the following features:

  • 5,000 Swiss francs will be provided to the selected applicants if they reside in Switzerland
  • and CHF 8000 if they are not resident in Switzerland this is for the cost of their tuition fees.
  • They will also receive 18,000 Swiss francs per academic year to cover the cost of living in Geneva.

How to Apply for the HEI Scholarship

  • Students must register, log in and complete their application to register themselves via the Moddle portal.
  • After application, all students will be considered for financial aid upon submission and acceptance of the application.
