Jacobs University Bremen (originally called International University Bremen) was founded in 1999 with the support of the University of Bremen, Rice University in Houston, Texas, and the Hanseatic Free City of Bremen, study programs began in 2001. The Jacobs Foundation invested €200 million in the foundation in November 2006, thus acquired a majority of two-thirds stake in the partnership. At the beginning of 2007, the university changed its name to Jacobs University Bremen.

The campus is located on the site of the former Roland Barracks in Bremen-Grün. The site was constructed in 1938 during the National Socialist period. After World War II, it was converted into a camp for the displaced by the International Refugee Organization under the management of US forces known as Camp Grune. Soon after the formation of the Bundeswehr, the Grünne camp passed into the responsibility of the German government in 1955 and was renamed Roland Kasern. Roland Kaserne housed the Bundeswehr logistics school during the Cold War. In 1999, the military base was disabled, making way for the university.
